BALTIMORE, Md. - For the third time in the first four games of the season, sophomore Dwayne Morton (Waynesville, Mo./Waynesville) went into double-figures, as he scored a team-high 10 points for the Goucher men's basketball team in an exhibition game at NCAA Division I member Loyola on Tuesday night.
On the night, Loyola was victorious over the Gophers in the contest, 97-45, which was held at Reitz Arena.
In the game, the Gophers came out strong to open the contest, taking an early 8-5 lead on Loyola after first-year Devon Esslinger (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) knocked down a jumper with 15 minutes to go in the first half.
But, the host Greyhounds quickly took the lead back at 9-8 at the 14-minute mark, then extended the lead out to 15-8 with 12:27 left. Goucher, however, quickly cut the lead back down to four after first-year Timmy O'Farrell (Davidsonville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) nailed a three-pointer, making it a 15-11 game.
With 10:28 to go in the half, the Gophers remained in the game, trailing the Greyhounds by just six points (19-13). But, Loyola ended the half on a 25-4 run to take a commanding 44-17 lead into intermission.
In the second half, Loyola continued to increase their lead over Goucher, eventually going up by 30 points (52-22) early in the period. The deficit was too much for the Gophers to come back from, as the host Greyhounds went on to take the exhibition tilt by a sizeable margin.
Overall, Morton led the way with his 10-point effort for Goucher. Meanwhile, Esslinger nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Pat Goralski (Pasadena, Md. /Chesapeake) rounded out the top performers for Goucher in the contest with six points and six rebounds.
