WESTMINSTER, Md. - Sophomore guard Dwayne Morton (Waynesville, Mo./Waynesville) was the Goucher College men's basketball teams lone double-digit scorer on the day, as he matched a game-high with 19 points in a 69-53 defeat at McDaniel on Saturday.
With the defeat, Goucher fell to 0-7 overall, while McDaniel improved to 2-6 overall with the victory.
In the opening half of the contest, offense was hard to come by for the Gophers, as McDaniel quickly opened a double-digit lead (20-10) 10 minutes into the contest. Once the Green Terror was able to take a double-figure lead, they didn't relinquish it the rest of the half, as McDaniel held a 31-16 edge over Goucher into intermission.
The second half saw more of the same, as the Green Terror continued to lead by a sizable margin throughout the period.
The closest Goucher came to the McDaniel lead the rest of the contest was 11 points (43-32 with 11 minutes left), as the Green Terror went on to open an insurmountable 57-38 lead with five minutes to go. From there, McDaniel coasted, on their way to a home victory over the Gophers.
Overall Morton had a big day in a losing effort for Goucher, scoring 19 points while pulling down seven rebounds (matching a career-high). Morton, who was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the loss, went into double-digits in a game for the sixth time on the year and came within a basket of matching his career-high which was set in the Gophers 2017-18 season opener vs. Wilson (Nov. 15).
Elsewhere, first-year forward Devon Esslinger (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) came off the bench to score eight points (on 3-of-4 shooting from the floor), while pulling down six rebounds.
The Goucher College men's basketball team will now be idle for the week for final exams, returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 16 at Roanoke. The game, which is part of the Cregger Invitational, will tip-off at 1 p.m.
