BALTIMORE, Md. - Host Johns Hopkins opened a double-digit lead on the Goucher College men's basketball team in the first 10 minutes of their non-conference match-up on Wednesday night, and never looked back, as the Gophers dropped a 73-45 decision on the road.
With the defeat, Goucher dropped to 0-11 overall for the season, while Johns Hopkins improved to 9-2 with the win.
On the night, Goucher had a difficult time scoring against a stingy Johns Hopkins defense, as the host Blue Jays opened a 16-4 lead on the Gophers with 10:20 to go in the first half.
From there, Johns Hopkins was able to hold a double-digit lead on Goucher for the rest of the opening period, as they went into the locker room for intermission up, 26-13.
In the second half, Goucher opened play scoring four points in a row to cut the Johns Hopkins lead down to 11 points (28-17) and trailed 30-19 with 17 minutes to go in the regulation. This, however, was the closest the Gophers came to the JHU lead the rest of the game, as a 10-0 run put the Blue Jays up for good at 40-19 with 14 minutes to go in the game.
Overall, senior Elliott Wiley (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) was Goucher's leading scorer in the defeat, ending with 12 points, while also pulling down seven rebounds. Elsewhere, the freshman pair of Jacob Smith (Callaway, Va./Franklin County) and Devon Esslinger (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces) scored eight points, apiece, to round out the top performers for Goucher.
The Goucher College men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, as they jump back into Landmark Conference play when they host Drew at home. Tip-off in the Decker SRC Arena is set for 2 p.m.
