TOWSON, Md. - Senior guard Elliott Wiley (Baltimore, Md.) of the Goucher men's basketball team scored a game and career-best 26 points on the evening at Catholic on Wednesday night in Landmark Conference action, but it wasn't enough, as the host Cardinals pulled out a 90-64 win over the Gophers.
With the defeat, Goucher dropped to 0-15 on the year and 0-5 in the Landmark Conference, while Catholic improved to 9-7 and 3-2 in the Landmark with the win.
In the game, Catholic took control of the contest early, opening a 21-8 lead on the Gophers in the first 10 minutes of regulation. The host Cardinals eventually extended the lead out to 23-9 on Goucher, which was followed by a 10-0 run by the Gophers that sliced the Catholic lead down to 23-19 with eight minutes to go in the period.
But, this would be the closest Goucher came to the Catholic lead the rest of the first half, as the Cardinals went on a quick 6-0 run to go back up double-digits (29-19) over the Gophers.
Once Catholic went back up by double-figures, they kept a sizeable lead over Goucher for the rest of the half, and held a 43-29 edge over the Gophers at the half.
In the second half, it was more of the same for Catholic, as they opened up an insurmountable 67-47 lead with 10 minutes to go on the Gophers. From there, the host Cardinals rolled, on their way to their third Landmark Conference win of the year.
Overall, Wiley was dominant offensively in the win, beating his previous career-high of 21 points (which was set this past Saturday at Scranton) with his 26-point performance. Wiley, who also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out five assists, shot at a torrid pace from three-point range all night, finishing 6-of-7 from beyond the arc in the defeat.
For Wiley, it marked the seventh straight game he has scored in double-figures, and the third time on the year he hit the 20-point plateau in a contest, as well.
Elsewhere, first-year Nate Kaniut (Arlington, Va.) finished with eight points off the Gopher bench, while fellow first-year Jacob Smith (Callaway, Va.) ended with five points, but pulled down a season-best 13 rebounds off the glass.
The Goucher College men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, as they host Elizabethtown inside the Decker SRC Arena for a Landmark Conference match-up. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
