ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Senior guard Eliott Wiley (Baltimore, Md.) once again led the Goucher men’s basketball team in scoring, finishing with a game-high 24 points, while first-year Jacob Smith (Callaway, Va.) finished with a season-best 20 points at Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon.
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Senior guard Elliott Wiley (Baltimore, Md.) once again led the Goucher men's basketball team in scoring, finishing with a game-high 24 points, while first-year Jacob Smith (Callaway, Va.) finished with a season-best 20 points at Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon.
But, the scoring efforts by Wiley and Smith were not enough to get the Gophers (0-22, 0-12 Landmark) over the top, as the host Blue Jays (5-17, 2-10 Landmark) took a 92-75 decision over Goucher in Landmark Conference action.
In the ballgame, E-Town used a first half run to essentially put the game out of Goucher's reach. Up 9-8 in the first five minutes of the game over the Gophers, the Blue Jays eventually opened up a double-digit lead (30-20) over Goucher with 4:35 to go in the half.
But, to end the period, Elizabethtown went on a 13-5 run, going up 43-25 on Goucher entering intermission. The 18-point deficit proved to be too much for the Gophers to come back from in the second period, as E-Town eventually opened up a 20-point lead early in the half on Goucher and never looked back.
In the defeat, Wiley once again was a force on the offensive end for the Gophers.
The 24-point effort for the senior guard (on 8-of-16 shooting) was the second best in a game for his career, as he also pulled down 11 rebounds in the defeat to notch his fifth double-double of the season and second straight overall. Wiley has scored in double-figures in 13 of the 14 games he's played in for the season, and has now scored at least 20 points in three straight contests for the Gophers.
Smith, meanwhile, registered a season-best effort in the defeat with his 20-point afternoon. Smith, who also pulled down eight rebounds in the loss, has now scored in double-digits in 10 games for the year, as well.
Elizabethtown was led in the win by Matt Thomas, who scored 18 points off the bench for the Blue Jays.
The Goucher College men's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, as they host Juniata in their second-to-last game of the 2017-18 season. The Landmark Conference match-up inside the Decker SRC begins at 7 p.m.
