Goucher Men's Basketball Falls To Scranton In Landmark Conference Opener
BALTIMORE, Md. – Goucher College dropped its Landmark Conference men's basketball opener to the University of Scranton on Saturday.
Dwayne Morton (Baltimore, Md./Waynesville [Mo.]) paced the Gophers with 13 points. Morton shot 4-for-9 from the floor, 2 of 4 from behind the arc and 3 of 3 from the free throw line. The senior reached double figures for the fourth time this season and the first time since he posted 13 points against Christendom on November 19. Morton now has 39 career games with at least 10 points and he has 24 double figure games in his last 33 games.
Pat Goralski (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), who was in foul trouble for most of the day, finished with nine points. It was the fifth time this season the senior has registered at least nine points in a game including four 10+ point games and a career-high 17 points at Valley Forge on November 8.
As part of the 25th Anniversary celebration of Goucher's first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament win, Peter Manlove served as the honorary guest coach for the game against Scranton. Manlove was the third player from that era to serve as honorary guest coach, joining Marc Cousins and David Clark. More guest coaches will be announced for the second half of the schedule.
Goucher never took the lead, but tied the game at 2, 5, 9 and 11. However, after Goralski tied the game at 11 with 12:08 left in the first half, the Royals closed the half on a 22-2 run including 19 unanswered points over the last eight minutes of the period. The Gophers, who went 13 minutes and 38 seconds without a field goal that spanned from the end of the first into the second half, lost the game 87-38 after Scranton outscored the hosts 54-25 in the second half.
Goucher returns to action on Sunday, December 15 in an NCAA Division I exhibition game at William & Mary. Game time is 12 p.m. The Gophers will not be back at Decker Sports and Recreation Center until January 8 against Gallaudet.
