Isaacs-Morton Tandem Propels Goucher Men's Basketball To 79-73 Win Against Gallaudet
BALTIMORE, Md. – Cam Isaacs (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) and Dwayne Morton (Baltimore, Md./Waynesville [Mo.]) combined for 12 of the final 20 Goucher College points to power a 20-14 run to close the game and hand the Gophers a 79-73 win against Gallaudet University in non-conference men's basketball action on Wednesday.
Isaacs.broke a 59-all standstill with a trey at 6:51 off a pass from Morton to give Goucher the lead for good. Darrell Collins (Baltimore, Md./New Town) and Pat Goralski (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) each traded baskets with the Bison before Isaacs nailed another triple with 3:35 remaining for a 69-63 lead. The rest of the tilt became a free throw contest for the Gophers with Morton going 6-for-6 from the line, Timmy O'Farrell (Davidsonville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) 3-for-4 and Isaacs also made a freebie to stave off the Bison for the team's second-straight win with the six-point victory.
Morton backed up his career-high 37 points against Cairn in a 96-90 win on December 30 with 33 points along with eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. The senior shot 10-for-16 from the floor, 7 of 10 from behind the arc and 6 of 6 from the free throw line. In his last two games, Morton is averaging 35.0 points per game after notching two great shooting performances to combine to go 23-for-36 from the floor, 16-for-20 from 3-point land and 8-for-8 from the charity stripe.
Morton becomes the first Goucher player to score 30 points in back-to-back games since Kevin Miles posted 33 points against RIT on November 15, 2015 and 31 points against Stevenson three days later. Morton has scored 30 points three times in his last 16 games after registering a then career-best against Drew on February 2, 2019. He now has nine games with 20 points or more and 43 games in double figures in points. He also joined the 900-point club on Wednesday and now has 929 career points.
Isaacs finished with 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor, 3 of 5 from behind the arc and 3 of 4 from the free throw line. The sophomore also tallied five rebounds, three assists and two steals. He has posted double figures in four-straight games and has scored 15 or more points five times in his sophomore campaign and seven times in his career. Isaacs, who is averaging 14.0 points per game in his last four games has posted eight double-figure point games this season and 18 in his career.
Collins notched his first career 10-point performance with a career-high 12 points. It was the most points scored since he registered nine points in his collegiate debut against Valley Forge on November 8.
Goucher held the lead for the first six minutes of the game before Gallaudet took the lead and grabbed a 35-25 advantage thanks to a 33-18 run. Down 10 points, Collins and Morton each had five points in a 10-0 spurt to even the match and help the Gophers go into the locker room knotted at 37.
The two teams traded the lead in the first 13 minutes of the second half until Isaacs knocked a 3-pointer with 6:51 on the clock and Goucher never trailed again on its way to its consecutive wins of the season and the first since the Gophers beat Christendom and Cairn in back-to-back games last season.
Goralski added six points, eight rebounds and four assists in the win. The senior has hauled in at least six caroms in 9 of the 11 games this season and has dished out 12 assists in his last two tilts.
Head coach Tom Rose has had a player hit 30 points in a game six times with Morton and Kevin Miles being the two players to turn the trick under the coach. Thirteen times a player has posted a 30-point performance dating back to the 2009-10.
Goucher restarts Landmark Conference play at Susquehanna University on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
