Griffins Prevail Following See-Saw Second Half

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - Following a see-saw second half, host Gwynedd Mercy University closed the game outscoring Goucher College 18-9 to record a 62-53 non-conference men's basketball victory Wednesday night at the Griffin Complex.
- After being down 7-2 early, Goucher (2-4) used a 6-0 spurt capped by a basket by Cam Isaacs (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) with 10:51 on the clock to take an 8-7 lead.
- Gwynedd Mercy (5-2) countered with nine straight points to go up 16-8 with 8:15 left before halftime.
- A layup by Nieko White (Churchton, Md./Southern) with 7:38 on the clock halfted the Griffin run.
- Gwynedd extended its lead to a dozen, 22-10, with just under five minutes left before intermission.
- Seven straight Gopher points capped by an Isaacs three with 2:20 remaining pulled the guests within five, 22-17.
- Gwynedd Mercy took a 25-19 lead into the break.
- Back-to-back threes by Josh Lichti (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) and Mal Graham (Grasonville, Md/Kent Island) to open the second half pulled Goucher into a 25-25 tie at the 17:20 mark.
- The Griffins scored the next five points to go back in front 30-25.
- Down 35-29, Goucher reeled off eight straight points and an Isaacs basket with 10:29 left gave the Gophers a 37-35 lead.
- The lead traded hands twice with a Will Towne (Alexandria, Va./Deerfield Academy) three with 8:27 to go putting the guests back in front 40-39.
- After Gwynedd scored five in a row to go up 44-40, Goucher got baskets by John Dixon (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) and Ryan Conde (Ewing, N.J./Solebury School) to tie things again 44-44 with 6:46 on the clock.
- The Griffins scored the game's next seven points to build a 51-44 lead with just under five minutes remaining.
- After an Isaacs three-point play made it 51-47, Gwynedd Mercy scored the next five to take a nine-point lead with 3:27 on the clock.
- Goucher cut the lead to seven three times down the stretch but got no closer.
- Isaacs led the Gophers in scoring for the fourth time this season with 14 points while adding four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
- Freshman Dixon finished 6-9 from the floor off the bench and recorded a career-high 12 points, his second double-digit scoring effort of the season.
- Goucher shot 43.4% from the floor and was 4-18 behind the arc while the Griffins shot 37% overall and 8-29 from long range.
- The hosts took nine more trips to the free throw line, going 14-16 while the Gophers went 3-7 at the stripe.
- The Griffins held a 40-25 rebounding advantage including 11-4 on the offensive glass.
- Goucher held an opponent under 63 points for the fourth time in six games.
- The game saw four ties and six lead changes.
- Goucher opens Landmark Conference play at home on Saturday, December 4, when it hosts Drew in a 2 pm contest at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
