Gophers Edged by Greyhounds in See-Saw Battle

TOWSON, Md. - Despite a career-high 20 points by Goucher College freshman Tevin Venson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone), the Gophers were edged 64-60 by Moravian University in Landmark Conference men's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
- Goucher (3-15, 0-8 Landmark) was up 6-3 on a basket by Riley Galler (Newport, Tenn./Cosby) 3:24 into the game.
- The game saw four lead changes over the next nearly four minutes, with back-to-back layups by Nieko White (Churchton, Md./Southern) and Ryan Conde (Ewing, N.J./Solebury School) giving the Gophers a 12-9 lead at the 11:52 mark.
- A three by John Dixon (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) extended the Goucher lead to 15-9 10:41 before halftime.
- Moravian (8-10, 3-5) scored the game's next six points to tie the game 15-15 just past the midway point.
- After the Greyhounds went up 19-16, the Gophers scored the next four points to take a 20-19 lead on a Venson layup with 4:34 on the clock.
- Three more lead changes in the next minute put Moravian on top 23-22.
- A Dixon layup with 2:25 left tied the game 25-25.
- The guests took a 27-25 lead into the break after a basket by Danny Cooper with six seconds on the clock.
- Moravian took an early 31-27 lead before a Galler basket and a three by Josh Lichti (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) put the Gophers back in front, 32-31, with 17:02 to play.
- The lead changed hands five times in the next 1:33 with a Mike Dipietro layup putting Moravian in front 37-36.
- The Greyhounds built a 45-39 lead with 10:28 remaining.
- Trailing 47-41, Goucher reeled off seven straight points with a Venson layup at the 6:09 mark putting Goucher on top 48-47.
- Moravian retook the lead with two free throws on its next possession and a 6-0 spurt gave it a 53-48 lead with just under five minutes left.
- Goucher got back within two, 55-53, with 2:41 left on two free throws by Octavius Johnson (Houston, Texas/Pasadena Memorial).
- A Nate Santiago layup with just under a minute left gave Moravian a 57-53 lead, but Venson scored on the next Goucher possession to make it 57-55 with 42 seconds left.
- C.J. Weber knocked down a three with 13.9 seconds left to push Moravian's lead to five.
- Conde converted a layup with seven seconds left, followed by Moravian sinking two free throws.
- Venson came down and hit a three with 1.3 seconds on the clock, but Moravian sank two more free throws to seal the win.
- Venson finished 8-16 from the floor and was the lone Gopher in double figures.
- Johnson totaled eight points, a career-best 16 rebounds and three blocked shots. It marked Johnson's third time reaching double figures in rebounds in the past four games.
- Lichti added nine points, including going 4-4 from the free throw line.
- Goucher shot 41.5% overall, was 4-14 from three and 12-21 at the free throw line.
- The Greyhounds, who outrebounded the Gophers 37-34, shot 44.6% from the floor, 3-11 from long range and 11-14 at the free throw line.
- Both teams had just 10 turnovers. The game featured seven ties and 18 lead changes.

- Goucher remains home Wednesday night, hosting Elizabethtown for a 7 pm Landmark Conference contest at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center. Spectators are currently not permitted at Goucher home sporting events.
