Gophers Hold Off Late Mountie Charge, Post First WIn of Season

TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College men's basketball team jumped out to a 43-18 halftime lead and held off a late charge by Mount Aloysius College to record its first win of the season, 68-54, over the Mounties Tuesday night at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
- Mount Aloysius (2-1) scored the first two points of the game before back-to-back threes by Darrell Green (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) and Jacob Morgan (Bowie, Md./Bowie) made it 6-2 two minutes in.
- An 8-0 Goucher (1-2) spurt capped by a John Dixon (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) three made it 19-7 seven minutes in.
- A 10-2 run capped by a layup by Onterio Miller (Bronx, N.Y./Mott Haven) put the Gophers up 29-11 8:31 before intermission.
- The hosts continued to gradually pull away and a Thomas Lewis (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) three with 45 seconds left in the first half made it 43-15.
- Goucher held a 43-18 lead at halftime.
- Mount Aloysius chipped away and got the lead down to 20, 46-26, just over four minutes into the second half.
- Goucher got the lead back to 24, 55-31, following two free throws by Green with 10:08 on the clock.
- A 9-0 Mountie run capped by a Jason Coronado basket pulled the guests within 15, 55-40, with 7:48 left.
- Trailing 61-45 with six minutes left, Mount Aloysius scored nine straight to make it a 61-54 game with 2:07 remaining.
- Goucher responded with six quick points in the next minute to seal the win, including back-to-back baskets by Morgan and a steal and layup by Green.
- Goucher shot 35% for the game and made eight of its 28 three point attempts and went 12-19 at the free throw line.
- The Mounties shot 33% overall, were 4-14 behind the arc, and made nine more trips to the free throw line, going 16-28.
- The Gophers forced 31 Mount Aloysius turnovers, turning them into 24 points, with the guests holding a 52-36 rebounding advantage.
- Morgan, Green and Brandon Joseph (Bowie, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) each finished with 13 points to pace Goucher.
- Joseph also grabbed seven rebounds and had three blocked shots, finishing 6-11 from the floor.
- Green knocked down a pair of three-pointers, while Morgan added four steals and five rebounds.
- Lewis went 3-5 behind the arc and finished with a career-best 11 points.
- Dixon and Miller added nine and seven points, respectively.

- Goucher is back home on Saturday when it hosts Delaware Valley University in a 4 pm contest at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
