Unbeaten Drew Holds Off Gophers 90-82

TOWSON, Md. - A 20-2 surge over four minutes by unbeaten Drew University midway through the second half proved to be the difference as the Rangers held off Goucher College for a 90-82 Landmark Conference men's basketball victory Saturday afternoon at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
- Goucher (1-4, 0-2 Landmark) led 6-5 following two Onterio Miller free throws just over three minutes into the game.
- After the Gophers tied the game two more times, Drew (7-0, 2-0) jumped out to a 21-14 lead at the 12:29 mark and was up 24-16 following a Peso Crump three with 10:44 on the clock.
- The Rangers took their largest lead of the opening stanza, 36-23, with 6:24 left before halftime.
- An 11-2 Gopher run capped by a hook shot by Alex Miller with 2:41 left pulled Goucher within four, 38-34.
- A pair of Darnell Morris Jr. free throws with 2:09 left pulled the hosts within three, 39-36.
- The Rangers took a 44-40 lead into the break.
- Goucher fell behind early before a 7-0 run capped by a Darrell Green basket at the 14:17 mark pulled the Gophers within one, 52-51.
- The Gophers cut the lead to one two more times, with a Green triple with 9:53 on the clock making it 63-62.
- Drew made six of its next seven field goal attempts, including 3-4 behind the arc, as it outscored Goucher 20-2 over the next 3:53 to build an 83-64 lead.
- The hosts chipped away and a Green three with just under three minutes remaining capped a 10-1 run and made it a 84-74 game.
- Goucher cut the lead to eight twice, including on a Jacob Morgan layup with 1:32 to go, but got no closer.
- Morgan paced four Gophers in double figures with a season-high 20 points on 7-12 shooting. He also had four assists, five steals and four rebounds.
- Green scored all 17 of his points after halftime, going 7-13 from the floor and 3-6 from three. Green also registered five rebounds.
- Liech Kong narrowly missed his second double-double of the season with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Morris had 11 points off the bench.
- Onterio Miller contributed seven points and six rebounds.
- Goucher shot 50% (31-62) from the floor and 16-22 (72.7%) from the free throw line, including 13-13 in the first half. The Gophers were 4-14 behind the arc.
- Drew was 12-30 from long range and shot 48.4% overall and 18-28 (64.3%) from the free throw line.
- Both teams grabbed 37 rebounds.
- Morgan has reached double figures in each of the first five games of the season.
- Goucher hits the road Wednesday night, traveling to Moravian for a 7 pm Landmark Conference contest.
- The Gophers return home on Saturday, December 16, hosting Notre Dame (Md.) for a 2 pm non-conference tilt at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
