Gophers Sunk by Second-Place River Hawks

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Susquehanna University, currently sitting second in the Landmark Conference men's basketball standings, led nearly wire-to-wire as it posted an 89-65 win over Goucher College Wednesday evening at Houts Gymnasium.
- Goucher (7-13, 5-8 Landmark) held a 4-3 lead 2:22 into the game following a Jacob Morgan basket.
- A 10-0 run by Susquehanna (14-6, 11-2) put it up 13-4 just over five minutes into the contest.
- The Gophers chipped away and a Darnell Morris Jr. basket with 13:26 left pulled the guests within four, 15-11.
- The River Hawks built a 26-13 advantage midway through the half and took their largest first half lead, 34-17, with 6:26 on the clock.
- A Darrell Green basket 1:41 before intermission capped a 10-2 Gopher run making it 36-27.
- The hosts carried a 38-27 lead into the locker room.
- Goucher hung with the River Hawks in the opening minutes of the second half before a 10-4 Susquehanna spurt put it up 55-38 with 12:41 left.
- The Gophers whittled the lead to 13 twice, with an Onterio Miller basket at the 9:45 mark making it 61-48.
- SU responded with six straight points to go up 19, 67-48, with 8:21 on the clock.
- The two teams traded baskets before a 6-0 River Hawk run put the hosts in front 79-57 with just under five minutes to go.
- Susquehanna maintained at least an 18-point cushion the rest of the way.
- Morgan reached double figures for the fourth straight game and ninth time in 10 games with a team-best 17 points, going 8-15 from the floor. He also added five rebounds and a pair of assists.
- First year Morris notched a career-best 12 points, finishing 5-10 from the floor.
- Green was the third Gopher in double figures with 10 points, while Miller added seven.
- Brandon Joseph corralled nine rebounds and added five points and a blocked shot.
- Goucher shot 44.6% overall and 5-8 at the free throw line but was 2-18 behind the arc.
- Susquehanna, which held a 46-35 rebounding lead, shot 48.6% overall, was 8-19 behind the arc and 11-19 at the stripe.
- The River Hawks placed five players in double figures led by Brandon Lavitt's 21 points.
- Despite the loss, Goucher remains in sixth place in the Landmark standings as the four teams behind it also lost Wednesday evening.
- Goucher hits the road Saturday for a 2 pm Landmark tilt at Lycoming.
- The Gophers return home next Wednesday, February 7, hosting Elizabethtown at 7 pm
