Gophers Win Marlins Invitational, Gallegos Ties for Top Spot
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Goucher College men's golf team posted the low score on day two with a 324 to move up one spot and win the Marlins Invitational hosted by Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday at Cypress Point Country Club. The Gophers posted a two-day score of 651 to finish 10 shots better than North Carolina Wesleyan, which carded a 661 over the two-day event.
First year Jose Maria Gallegos (Ahome, Mexico / Montverde Academy) finished in a three-way tie for the top spot, carding an 80 on Sunday to finish at 159. He finished tied with Killian O'Reilly of Averett and John Wampler of Virginia Wesleyan. Gallegos finished second in the playoff, with O'Reilly prevailing on the second hole.
Sophomore Khai Buttner (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) placed fifth overall, firing a 78 on Sunday to finish at 161 for the tournament. Buttner posted the second-lowest score on day two, behind only Luke Burnside of Marymount who posted a 74.
Tim Winter (Howey In The Hills, Groningen / Harens Lyceum) placed tied for seventh, posting an 84 Sunday and a two-day total of 164. Nick Fisher (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) bettered his round by five shots with an 82 Sunday and posted a 167 to tie for 11th, while Miguel Reider (Mexico City, Mexico / Tecnológico de Monterrey) finished at 172 with a second-round 87 to tie for 15th.
The Goucher men's golf team returns to action next Saturday and Sunday when it competes in Catholic University's Cardinal Classic at Black Rock Golf Course in Hagerstown, Maryland.
