River Hawks Keep Gophers At Bay for First League Win

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Host Susquehanna University held off Goucher College for an 11-8 Landmark Conference men's lacrosse triumph at Sassafras Field Saturday afternoon.
- The River Hawks (7-5, 1-1 Landmark) scored the game's first two goals at 7:22 and 5:06 to take an early lead.
- Goucher (2-9, 1-1) got on the board 1:10 before the end of the first quarter as Jared Halverson (Durham, N.C./Charles E. Jordan) scored on a feed from Jared Heath (Windham, N.H./New Hampton).
- Susquehanna outshot Goucher 15-4 in the opening frame with Justin Lugo (Davie, Fla./Saint Andrew's School) making seven saves.
- Chris Ciccarello put Susquehanna up 3-1 33 seconds into the second.
- The Gophers reeled off three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead.
- Dylan White (Dagsboro, Del/Indian River) scored back-to-back at 12:03 and 10:01, with Heath assisting on the second tally.
- Heath's goal 31 seconds later put the guests in front 4-3.
- The River Hawks scored four times in the fina 6:15 of the quarter, including a pair of Steven Musster scores, to take an 7-4 lead into the break.
- Ben Smith (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) pulled Goucher within 7-5 as he scored on a Heath feed with 10:24 to go in the third.
- Musser struck again with just under seven minutes to go to allow the hosts to reclaim a three-goal cushion.
- Milan Temple (Joppatowne, Md./Concordia Prep) put the Gophers back within two as he added an unassisted tally with just over four minutes left.
- Two goals in a span of 2:31 put the hosts in front 10-6 with 9:43 on the clock.
- White's third goal of the game at 8:01, followed by a man-up goal by Heath with just under seven minutes left, made it 10-8.
- Ciccarello added an insurance goal with 5:26 left and the River Hawks maintained possession much of the rest of the way.
- Susquehanna generated a 52-26 shot advantage with Lugo registering 20 saves, matching his season high.
- Lugo also picked up six ground balls.
- Heath finished with two goals and three assists and extended his goal scoring streak to seven games.
- White scored a career-high three goals, while Smith added a goal and an assist.
- Dwayne Barnes, Jr. (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) picked up three ground balls.
- Goucher returns home next Saturday as it hosts Moravian in a 1 pm Landmark Conference contest at Beldon Field.
- Prior to next Saturday's game, the Gophers will host Senior Day ceremonies.
