One Goal Thwarts Gophers' Bid for Upset
Feuerstein Makes Six Saves on 22 Opponent ShotsOctober 25, 2006
TOWSON, MD — Goucher foiled every scoring
opportunity that York was able to muster today — except one.
And that was all the nationally ranked Spartans needed to avoid an
upset and escape Beldon Field with a 1-0 victory over the Gophers
that kept their undefeated record intact.
The only goal of the contest was scored at 52:43 of the second half
by Andrew Wheeler with an assist from Mike Baker. It was Wheeler's
team-leading 17th goal of the season, and it ruined a bid by senior
goalkeeper Tom Feuerstein (Princeton Junction, NJ/Princeton
Day School) of the Gophers for a third straight shutout.
Feuerstein, Goucher's all-time leader with 16 career shutouts,
faced a total of 22 shots and finished with six saves.
The Gophers (9-8, 3-5 Capital Athletic Conference) were looking to
end a 13-game losing streak to the Spartans (16-0-2, 8-0 Capital
Athletic Conference), who entered the contest at No. 3 in this
week's NSCAA/adidas Division III national rankings. Goucher, which
faces third-seeded St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday in the opening round
of the 2006 CAC championship tournament, hasn't defeated York in
the sport of men's soccer since a 1-0 victory back on Sept. 19,
1995.
