TOWSON, Md. - Although Goucher and Susquehanna combined to take a total of 27 shots during regulation today, neither team was able to score a goal. Ten more shots during overtime also failed to break the scoreless deadlock, producing the first tie in the history of the Landmark Conference.
Both teams had nearly the identical number of scoring chances during regulation. The Crusaders (6-2-2, 1-0-1 Landmark) got off 14 shots, but all six that were on goal were stopped by sophomore goalkeeper Justin Holbrook (Claymont, DE/Wilmington Friends School). Likewise, the Gophers (3-6-1, 0-1-1 Landmark) unleashed 13 shots, forcing goalie B.J. Merriam to make five saves.
But during the two 10-minute overtime periods, Susquehanna managed to out-shoot head coach Gary Dunda's Gophers, 8-2. Holbrook made two saves in the first OT and four more in the second OT to finish with 12.
The Gophers hadn't been involved in a scoreless tie since a game against Mary Washington on Sept. 27, 2003.
