TOWSON, Md. – Goucher and Salisbury have squared off against one another at least once every year since 1993 – but the Gophers really had very little to show for their efforts. Sixteen times the two teams met over a 15-year period and the Sea Gulls prevailed each and every time.
There were several close games. In fact, the Sea Gulls defeated the Gophers by a single goal for five consecutive years starting in 2002.
And it looked like head coach Gary Dunda's Gophers were headed for yet another gut-wrenching loss to Salisbury on Beldon Field this afternoon. Less than five minutes remained and the Sea Gulls, who entered the contest ranked No. 17 in Division III, were up 1-0 thanks to a goal by Mike Napolitano at 60:20.
Goucher (4-3-1) had worked the ball deep into its attacking area and was awarded a throw-in. The throw by Tim McMullen (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) was long enough that it eluded Salisbury's goalkeeper, allowing Galen Guindon (Wallingford, Pa./Friends Central) to rise above the crowd and head the ball toward the far post and into the net at 85:42, creating a 1-1 tie.
When neither team was able to score during the final 4:18 of regulation or in either of the two 10-minute overtime periods, the 1-1 tie stood up as the final result.
Guindon's goal is only the third allowed by the Sea Gulls in their nine games so far this season.
"I'm proud of each and every one of my guys," Dunda said after the contest, which drew a crowd of 319. "To be down by a goal to a quality team such as Salisbury and then find a way to put the ball in the net, it shows what our guys are made of. They believe in themselves, each other and our soccer program."
The Sea Gulls (8-0-1) finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots, including 7-1 during the two overtime periods. Justin Holbrook (Claymont, Del./Wilmington Friends School) was credited with five saves during regulation and three more in OT, including one just before time expired in the second extra session.
