SCRANTON, Pa. – An unassisted goal by Elijah Lais (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) at 62:12 allowed Goucher to pull into a 1-1 tie with Scranton today, strengthening the Gophers' chances of qualifying for the upcoming Landmark Conference postseason tournament.
But when the Royals (9-3-4, 5-1-1 Landmark Conference) regained the lead at 78:45 on a goal by Kyle Falana and then held on for a 2-1 victory, the Gophers' hopes of making the playoffs were totally dashed.
Scranton, which finished with a 16-12 edge in shots, got on the scoreboard first on a goal by Justin Canning at 28:31. The Royals maintained their 1-0 advantage until Lais tallied his third goal of the season.
Both teams got solid performances out of their starting goalkeepers. Due to a season-long series of injuries, Evan Rosse (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) became the fourth player to start in the nets for the Gophers (7-7-1, 1-4 Landmark) in 2008 and he responded by turning away a pair of shots. Brandon Dombrowski went the distance in goal for the Royals and made four saves, all in the second half.
