Freshman GK Finishes Strong, Preserves Two-Goal Lead
TOWSON, Md. — The unassisted goal that Elijah Lais (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) scored with :03 remaining in the first half tonight was huge for Goucher.
For starters, it wiped out the 1-0 lead Lancaster Bible had enjoyed for nearly 15 minutes. It also provided the Gophers with momentum heading into the second half, which they quickly put to good use. Just 2:27 into the period, Lais scored a second goal, presenting the home team with its first lead of the contest.
The Gophers, however, were not done scoring — and neither was Lais. The junior defender tacked on a third goal at 67:26, putting his team up 3-1, which turned out to be the final score.
No Goucher player has scored three of more goals in a game since a four-goal performance by Andrew Bull (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) against Gallaudet on Sept. 1, 2007.
Eddie McMullen (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) and Jay Berger (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) both picked up assists on Lais' tie-breaking goal at 47:27.
The Chargers (2-5), who finished with a 17-12 advantage in shots, took a 1-0 lead at 30:03 on a goal by Miles Oxenford.
In the 87th minute, freshman David Spivey (Brooklandville, Md./Park School), who started in goal for the Gophers (3-5), stopped a pair of back-to-back point-blank shots by Sean Westerlund, giving him a total of five saves.
