TOWSON, Md. — Scoring opportunities were few and far between for both teams today as Goucher was playing its first Landmark Conference game of the season against Juniata on Beldon Field. Even though the Eagles didn't get their first shot off until nearly 10 minutes had elapsed in the second half, they tallied the only goal of the contest in the 66th minute to earn a 1-0 victory.
After getting off four shots in the opening 45:00, the Gophers (4-6, 0-1 Landmark) were limited to just one attempt during the second half. Goalie Ezra Cassel of the Eagles earned the shutout by making two saves: one on a shot by junior defender Tom Gray (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) in the 30th minute and the second on a shot by junior midfielder Elijah Lais (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) in the 70th minute.
Luke Waddell scored the goal for the Eagles (7-2, 1-1 Landmark) at 65:18, getting off a low, driving shot from the top of the box following a free kick by Noah Bowers.
Freshman Joe Kon (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) went the distance in goal for Goucher and made four saves while lowering his goals-against average to 1.70.
Since the formation of the Landmark Conference, Goucher is 1-2-1 against Juniata. The Eagles defeated the Gophers, 2-1, last year by scoring a goal 3:57 into overtime.
