Boyce's Goal at 13:34 Forms Tie That Lasts into Second Half
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Goucher stayed within a goal of Catholic into the 54th minute of play this afternoon before the Cardinals began to pull away and eventually record a 4-1 Landmark Conference victory over head coach Bryan Laut's Gophers.
The two teams traded goals in the opening 15 minutes of play. The Cardinals (8-5-2, 2-1-2 Landmark) got on the scoreboard first thanks to a goal by Kevin Duffy at 4:49, but junior defender Adam Boyce (Fallston, Md./Fallston) tallied his first goal of the season at 13:34 for the Gophers, creating a 1-1 tie.
Even though the Cardinals finished with a 26-4 advantage in shots, they didn't go ahead for good until Ian Smith's unassisted goal at 48:39 and the Gophers (4-12, 0-5 Landmark) didn't trail by more than a goal until Hal Cogan's unassisted goal at 52:40 put Catholic up 3-1.
The final goal of the contest was scored by Brian Maher at 84:50.
The win extends Catholic's unbeaten streak to six games.
