Goucher's First Loss to In-State Rivals in Seven All-Time Meetings
FREDERICK, Md. — Goucher's perfect all-time record against Hood in the sport of men's soccer came to an end this evening when Eric Diehl and Chris Mendez hooked up on a golden goal in the 110th minute to provide the Blazers with a 1-0 victory over head coach Bryan Laut's squad.
The Gophers, who took a 6-0 advantage in the all-time series between the two in-state rivals into the contest, had a goal by Elijah Lais (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) in the closing seconds of regulation waived off due to an offsides violation, keeping the game scoreless through 90 minutes.
The only shot in the first 10-minute overtime period was taken by Hood's Naseem Zietoon, who came close to ending the contest as his attempt trickled just wide of the post.
The Gophers (0-1), who got off seven shots during regulation, had two scoring opportunities during the second OT, but goalkeeper Will Lane of the Blazers made plays on both attempts. Lane finished with five saves.
Mendez also took two shots in the second extra session, but was unable to finish off either of them. He redeemed himself, however, with a pass that set up Diehl's game-winning goal with :27 showing on the clock.
David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School) went the distance in goal for Goucher and made six saves.
The Blazers (1-0) finished with an 18-9 edge in shots.
