TOWSON, Md. — An unassisted goal by Elijah Lais (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) in the 63rd minute accounted for all of the scoring this afternoon as Goucher picked up its first win of the season, a 1-0 triumph over Penn St. Berks.
With a victory over Johns Hopkins on Sunday, head coach Bryan Laut's squad would be the outright champions of the 2011 Goucher Soccer Classic. In Saturday's other opening-round game, the Blue Jays finished in a 1-1 draw with Wesley.
The goal by Lais was the 17th of his collegiate career. The senior forward accepted a pass from the left wing, shook a defender at the top of the box and then deposited the ball in the middle of the net, passing the keeper on the right side.
The Gophers (1-1) outshot the Nittany Lions, 28-9. David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./The Park School), who started seven contests in goal for Goucher last season as a freshman and both games so far in 2011, earned his first career shutout by making three saves.
Jonathan Jablonka went the distance in goal for the Nittany Lions (0-2) and was credited with 14 saves.
