Salta Picks Up Two Assists, Ices Victory with Goal in 72nd Minute
TOWSON, Md. — Lashaw Salta (Allen, Texas/Plano East) had a hand in three goals and Matt Fazekas (Potomac, Md./German School) found the back on the net twice in the first half as Goucher, which was able to score only one time in the first five games of the season, kept the scoreboard operator at Beldon Field on his toes this afternoon.
The Gophers, despite being outshot 23-7, bolted out to a 3-0 lead before halftime and went on to down Washington (Md.), 4-2.
Salta picked up an assist on the first goal of the contest when he delivered a long pass from the midfield that set up Adam Boyce (Fallston, Md./Fallston) to go one-on-one with and beat the goalkeeper at 6:12.
Fazekas followed with back-to-back goals just 7:20 apart. A low free kick in the box by Salta led to the sophomore midfielder's goal at 15:17 that put the Gophers (2-4) up 2-0. Fazekas stuck another one at 22:37 after receiving a pass from Boyce.
Goucher watched its lead dwindle to 3-2 when Tim Marcin scored twice in a span of less than six minutes in the second half. Marcin got the visiting Shoremen (1-2-1) on the scoreboard when he ripped a shot from more than 25 yards out and placed it in the far top corner. Jordan Haas assisted Marcin's second goal at 67:26.
Salta restored Goucher's lead back to two goals at 71:01 when he beat the keeper one-on-one following a through ball from Elijah Lais (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett).
Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) was the goalkeeper of record for the Gophers. In just the second start of his career, the senior earned his first win by making six saves.
The victory ended the Gophers' five-game losing streak against opponents from the Centennial Conference that dated back to a 4-0 triumph over the Shoremen on Sept. 16, 2009.
