Adair Puts Goucher Up in Landmark Game for First Time Since 2008

TOWSON, Md. — When Thomas Adair (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) scored midway through the first half to put Goucher up 1-0 over Scranton this afternoon, the Gophers had a lead in a Landmark Conference game for the first time since they defeated Moravian, 2-1, by tallying the final two goals of the contest back on Oct. 11, 2008.

And when the Royals were never able to answer Adair's goal, the first of the freshman midfielder's collegiate career, the Gophers (4-5, 1-1 Landmark) were able to celebrate a 1-0 victory, their first win over a Landmark opponent since the Moravian game in 2008.

Nate Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) was awarded an assist on the game-winning goal as he lifted a ball in the box which bounced over the keeper. Adair, while he was fighting off a defender, was able to head the ball down and knock it in at 24:00.

In a bid to erase their 1-0 deficit, the Royals (2-4-2, 0-1 Landmark) unleashed 18 shots in the second half, boosting their total for the game to 24. Not one of them, however, got past senior goalkeeper Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston), who earned the first shutout of his career by making eight saves.

The win was the Gophers' first in six all-time meetings between Goucher and Scranton in the sport of men's soccer and it snapped a 20-game winless streak (0-19-1) in Landmark Conference contests that dated back to the 2-1 triumph over Moravian in 2008.
