Golden Goal by Lais at 91:54 Gets Goucher Back to .500
HUNTINGDON, Pa. — Goucher and Juniata reached the end of regulation still locked in a scoreless stalemate today, even though the two Landmark Conference teams had combined to take 21 shots over the 90 minutes.
It took only one shot in overtime to bring the contest to a conclusion.
Elijah Lais (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) supplied the golden goal at 91:54, providing the Gophers with a hard-fought and well-earned 1-0 triumph over the Eagles.
It was the 18th goal of the senior forward's career at Goucher and the third time he tallied the only goal in a 1-0 victory by the Gophers. Earlier this season, his goal at 62:56 accounted for all the scoring in a win over Penn St. Berks; he also did it against Marywood back on Sept. 4, 2009.
Freshman midfielder Nate Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) was awarded an assist on today's game-winning goal.
The Eagles (3-4, 0-2 Landmark) got off 14 shots during regulation and forced senior goalkeeper Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) to make two saves to earn his second shutout of the season for Goucher.
Five of the eight shots the Gophers (5-5, 2-1 Landmark) took were on goal.
