Starting Center Back Supplies Gophers with Pair of Goals
MADISON, N.J. — After being a major contributor at both ends of the field in games against Catholic and Moravian, Goucher's Brandon Weiner (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok A. Magruder) today was named Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week in the Landmark Conference for Oct. 17-23.
Weiner, a freshman who has started all 16 games at center back this season, was instrumental in holding both opponents below their season averages for goals. When the Cardinals squared off against the Gophers Tuesday night on Beldon Field, they came in averaging 2.31 goals per contest but were able to score only twice. The Greyhounds, meanwhile, had 15 goals to their credit in the first 15 games of the season, but they took only 14 shots and were shut out by head coach Bryan Laut's squad on Saturday.
Goucher's only goal in the 2-1 loss to Catholic was scored by Weiner in the 84th minute. He also accounted for the game-winning goal in the 2-0 triumph over Moravian, giving him three goals and an assist so far this season.
