Gophers Bow Despite 18-2 Advantage in Shots
WINCHESTER, Va. — Even an 18-2 advantage in shots wasn't enough for Goucher to earn its first victory of the young season this afternoon. Instead, the Gophers bowed to Shenandoah, 1-0, in a contest where the only goal was scored in the eighth minute.
Early Goal Stands Up Thanks to Goalie's 10-Save Effort
WINCHESTER, Va. — Even an 18-2 advantage in shots wasn't enough for Goucher to earn its first victory of the young season this afternoon. Instead, the Gophers bowed to Shenandoah, 1-0, in a contest where the only goal was scored in the eighth minute.
Goucher had already gotten off three shots by the time Eduardo Santiago scored for the Hornets (1-1) at 7:45. Santiago received a cross from Emilio Altamirano in the middle of the pitch, split a pair of defenders and then pushed the ball past the on-rushing goalkeeper from 10 yards out.
The Gophers (0-1-1) worked hard the remainder of the game to get on the scoreboard, unleashing 15 more shots. In addition, they were awarded nine corner kicks compared to just one for the Hornets.
James Dutcher started in goal for Shenandoah, playing all 90 minutes. He earned the shutout by making 10 saves, the final of which was on a header by George El-Khoury (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) in the 85th minute.
The Gophers got off two more shots following the header by El-Khoury, but attempts by Nate Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) and Jon Kum (Gwynn Oak, Md./Friends School) both were wide.
