Margolis Puts Goucher on Scoreboard First at 36:02
KINGS POINT, N.Y. — Goucher made it through 90 minutes of regulation locked in a 1-1 tie with the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, but thanks to an unassisted goal by Nick Vogel 9:06 into overtime, the defending Landmark Conference champions emerged with a 2-1 victory over head coach Bryan Laut's Gophers.
For the first time all season, the Gophers (1-3-1, 0-1 Landmark) got on the scoreboard first today, doing so on an unassisted goal by Nate Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) at 36:02 of the opening period. It was the sophomore midfielder's second goal of the season.
The 1-0 lead of the season was short lived, however. Just over five minutes later, Kyle Redrow broke through for the Mariners (4-2, 1-0 Landmark) to level the score.
Despite a combined total of 15 shots in the second half, neither team was able to place home a go-ahead tally, sending the contest into overtime. Ethan DeBandi (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty), making just his second start in goal for Goucher, notched five of his seven saves in the second period.
The Mariners held a 20-8 advantage in shots heading into overtime, but needed only one additional attempt to tally the game-winner.
