Margolis, Weiner Set Up Goal by Fazekas in 69th Minute
SCRANTON, Pa. — A scoreless first half between Goucher and Scranton ceded a furious second period from which the Royals emerged with a 3-1 Landmark Conference victory by tallying the first goal and also the final pair.
At intermission, the Royals (7-0, 1-0 Landmark) held a 15-3 edge in shots, but the scoreboard showed only zeros.
Just one minute into the second half, however, that was no longer true. Scranton's first shot of the period was saved, but Rich Loeffler cleaned up the rebound to make the score 1-0 on the Royals' 17th shot of the contest.
Despite falling behind, head coach Bryan Laut's Gophers (1-4-1, 0-2 Landmark) battled back to level the score on a direct kick off of a foul. Matt Fazekas (Potomac, Md./German School) coralled a relay from Nate Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) and Brandon Weiner (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok A. Magruder) on the restart to pull the Gophers even at 68:10.
Under three minutes later, however, the Royals took the lead for good, with John Spadaro slotting home another rebound. Patrick Daley's goal in the 82nd minute closed out the scoring.
Ethan DeBandi (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) made seven saves while manning the goal the entire 90 minutes for the Gophers.
