TOWSON, Md. — A balanced offensive effort provided Goucher with more than enough firepower to earn a 5-0 victory over Penn St. Berks in the team's first home game in 25 days.
The Gophers (2-4-1), playing on Beldon Field for the first time since a 3-3 draw with Hood back on August 31, needed just over 15 minutes to tally the game's first goal. Parker Bay (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) created space along the wing before slotting the ball into the box to Nate Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North). Margolis carried it through traffic, fighting off a pair of defenders before shielding them and dishing the ball back to Bay, now sitting on the top of the box. Bay ripped a shot, sticking it from 25 yards out.
Bay had a hand in the team's second goal, crossing the ball from the end-line into the 6, where Luis Gomes (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) beat a hard-charging keeper to the ball, just slipping it underneath an outstretched arm to double the lead.
Before the half concluded, Goucher's advantage grew to 3-0 when Nathaniel Meltzer (New York, N.Y./Bronx Science) cleared the ball deep to Marco Grotti (Milmay, N.J./Millville), who found himself without any support in the offensive zone, staring down a pair of defenders and the goalkeeper. Grotti, sensing the situation, took it himself and unleashed a gorgeous shot from 25 yards out, beating the sprawling keeper to the near top corner.
Margolis was fouled in the box in the 51st minute and awarded a penalty kick, which he converted low into the corner.
Logan Webster (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) became the fifth different player for Goucher to score when he executed a one-on-one move against the goalkeeper on a feed from Bay.
The Nittany Lions (1-7-1) managed two shots on net, but both were saved by freshman goalkeeper Scott Witte (Wall Twp., N.J./Wall), who earned a shutout in the first game of his collegiate career.
