Bielecki, Bay Tally Goals for Gophers
TOWSON, Md. — A pair of goals, less than ten minutes into each half, proved to be the difference in a 2-0 Landmark Conference win today.
Goucher (3-4-1, 1-2 Landmark) opened the scoring early, after earning a free after a foul near midfield. Brandon Weiner (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok A. Magruder) was selected to serve the ball into the box with his team congregated on the far side of the box. Weiner played the ball near-side, where Hudson Bielecki (Olivebridge, N.Y./Onteora) found himself open after making a run. Bielecki, now alone with the keeper, put the ball home just 7:39 into the contest.
Early in the second half, the lead was doubled after Nate Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North), last year's Landmark Conference leader in assists, chipped the ball into the box to Parker Bay (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg). Bay fought off a defender and just got enough on his shot to get it by the diving keeper.
Juniata (6-5, 0-2 Landmark) took plenty of shots looking to come back, but had very few good chances. Despite an overwhelming 20-11 advantage in shots, the Eagles only managed to get three on cage, all of which were stopped by Scott Witte (Wall Twp., N.J./Wall).
The best chance for the Eagles came right before intermission when Robby Higgins took a left-footed shot low just inside the post. Witte dove on the ground and knocked the ball away with his left hand just before it crossed the line, preserving the shutout.
