Weiner Leads Assault in Attempt to Overcome 1-0 Deficit
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Goucher stayed within a goal of Catholic well into the second half of this afternoon's Landmark Conference contest before the same player scored twice in a span of less than five minutes to propel the Cardinals past the Gophers, 3-0.
Of Catholic's first eight shots, three were blocked, two hit the post and the remaining three were turned away by freshman goalkeeper Scott Witte (Wall Twp., N.J./Wall). The Cardinals (10-5, 4-1 Landmark) wouldn't be denied on their ninth attempt, however, as Ben Fernandez put one past Witte at 24:23 to stake the home team to a 1-0 advantage.
The score wouldn't change again until Hunter Horvath knocked one in at 65:49. Horvath tacked on an unassisted goal for insurance at 69:52.
Witte finished with eight saves.
Cam McGrory, who played all 90 minutes in goal for Catholic, made three of his five saves during the stretch where the Gophers (3-9-1, 1-5 Landmark Conference) were still down by just a goal. He stopped a header by Brandon Weiner (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok A. Magruder) in the 33rd minute; in the second half, he made defensive plays on a shot by Thomas Adair (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) and another by Weiner before the Cardinals could add to their lead.
Catholic, which remained in a tie with Susquehanna for second place in the Landmark Conference, got off 29 shots, compared to nine for Goucher.
