READING, Pa. — Three Goucher players scored their first goals of the season today as the Gophers pinned a convincing 6-0 setback on Penn State Berks.
For two of the three, the goal they tallied in this afternoon's non-conference affair was also the first of their collegiate careers. Dustin Taylor (New York, N.Y./Riverdale Country School), a freshman forward making his first start, provided head coach Bryan Laut's squad with a 1-0 lead when he tallied his first goal in the opening minute of the contest. Later in the first half, sophomore midfielder Daniel Vu-Duc (Frederick, Md./Urbana) put the Gophers (5-2) up 2-0 when he sent a free kick from junior defenseman Brandon Weiner (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok A. Magruder) into the near corner for the first goal since he arrived at Goucher.
The other player who got into the scoring act for the first time in 2013 was junior midfielder Thomas Adair (Dunkirk, Md./Northern), who had one goal to his credit through his first two seasons with the Gophers. He successfully converted a penalty kick at 66:38, putting his team ahead 5-0.
P.J. Vaccarella (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) contributed two goals to the victory. The first one was a breakaway set up by Drew Afromsky (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) at 43:05 and the second an unassisted breakaway at 65:05.
Vu-Duc picked up an assist on Goucher's final goal, scored at 74:01 by sophomore forward Parker Bay (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg).
The Gophers outshot the Nittany Lions (0-4), 21-5, and were awarded seven corner kicks compared to two for their opponent.
The only time either of the goalkeepers who saw action for Goucher had to make a save in the game was in the first half when starter Nicholas Stolarz (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) stopped an attempt by Justin Bass.
The Gophers have two more non-conference games before they host the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in their first Landmark Conference contest of the season on September 27. The first one is against Stevenson on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m.
