ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — There were still nearly 10 minutes to play in the opening period and the entire second half to go when Goucher fell behind St. Mary's (Md.), 1-0, this afternoon in Seahawk Stadium.
That turned out to be a sufficient amount of time for the Gophers to catch the Seahawks, but then neither team was able to score over the final 13 minutes of regulation or either of the two 10-minute overtime periods as they finished in a 1-1 draw.
Matthew Braun staked the Seahawks (2-4-1) to a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when he found the top left shelf with a boot from more than 20 yards out.
The equalizer came at 76:48 when Brandon Weiner (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok A. Magruder) headed in a free kick from Kevin Tonkovich (Lacey, N.J./Lacey Twp.).
The Gophers (5-3-1) outshot their in-state opponent, 13-9, during regulation. That trend continued into overtime where shots were 5-3 in favor of Goucher.
To keep the Gophers from winning, goalie Austin Brown of the Seahawks had to make saves on a shot by Parker Bay (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) in the first OT and another by Tonkovich in the second extra session. He finished with nine saves.
The last scoring opportunity for either team was a shot by Braun that struck the crossbar with 4:46 remaining in the second overtime.
Nicholas Stolarz (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) was credited with four saves in his fifth consecutive start in goal for Goucher.
