TOWSON, N.J. — Despite a nine-save performance out of freshman goalkeeper Nicholas Stolarz (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson), Goucher suffered a 1-0 loss to Catholic tonight that prevented the Gophers from gaining any ground on the teams ahead of them in the Landmark Conference standings.
The Gophers (6-6-3, 1-2-2 Landmark) made it out of the first half without surrending a goal even though the Cardinals outshot them, 13-0. Stolarz was credited with six saves in the opening 45 minutes.
The first three shots of the second half also belonged to Catholic until Tate Becker (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) got off Goucher's first shot of the contest in the 55th minute. Becker's attempt was wide.
It wasn't until after Stolarz made two more saves that the the offensive pressure they applied the entire game finally paid off for the Cardinals (10-3-2, 3-0-1 Landmark) in the 73rd minute. Hunter Horvath, who tallied two of the goals in Catholic's 3-0 victory over Goucher last season, sent a cross from the left side that Earl Hamilton was able to drill into the corner with his right foot for his second goal of the 2013 campaign.
The Cardinals, who finished with a 25-3 advantage in shots, extended their winning streak against the Gophers to six matches with tonight's victory.
The Gophers play their final home game of the season on Saturday against Susquehanna, starting at 3:30 p.m.
