TOWSON, Md. — Goucher was less than two minutes away from its first victory of the season tonight when Rosemont quieted the crowd that had gathered at Beldon Field to support head coach Bryan Laut's squad by scoring a goal to knot the score up at 1-1.
The Gophers still got to celebrate that first win, however, but not before the two teams ended regulation in the same 1-1 deadlock and then battled through another eight minutes of extra time without either scoring a goal. It was junior forward Jeremy Hardy (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Beacon School) who brought an end to the contest 8:29 into overtime by sliding a ball past the opposing keeper after it had been served by junior defender Dustin Taylor (New York, N.Y./Riverdale Country School) for a 2-1 final score.
Goucher is now 4-0 all-time against Rosemont in the sport of men's soccer.
Taylor also was awarded an assist on the goal sophomore defender Drew Phillips (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls Central School) tallied at 41:21 that staked the Gophers (1-1) to a 1-0 advantage.
Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg), a freshman making just his second start in goal for Goucher, made seven saves and was closing in on a shutout when Anthony Bottoms scored for the Raven (0-2) at 88:25.
It's back on the road for the Gophers, who play at Penn St.-Harrisburg on Tuesday and at Gettysburg next Saturday before returning to Beldon Field on September 15 to take on Dickinson.
