GETTYSBURG, Pa. — A successful penalty kick by Tate Becker (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) in the 80th minute would be Goucher's only shining moment today as the Gophers were beaten by Gettyburg, 5-1, on Clark Field.
After the Gophers came up empty on two corner kick opportunities in the first two minutes of the game, the Bullets took over. Gettysburg lifted three shots, one being saved by freshman goalkeeper Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg), until the visiting team made a costly mistake. Around the 10 minute mark, a Goucher defender deflected a Gettysburg pass into the net, resulting in an own goal to give the Bullets (4-0) a 1-0 lead.
Eight minutes later, KJ DePontes notched his second goal of the season, which was asssisted by Patrick Santini, and suddenly the Gophers trailed 2-0.
Midway through the first half, Patrick Santini extended Gettysburg's lead to three as he cleared the ball past Hendry on a header for his third goal of the season.
Down by four goals, the Gophers (1-2-1) tried to change things up a bit midway through the second half with substitutions, but it was only Becker's penalty kick that got past Peter Como, who went the distance in goal for the Bullets.
Another own goal by the Gophers in the 86th minute closed out the scoring.
Despite taking the loss, Hendry finished with seven saves.
Goucher takes on a second consecutive opponent from the Centennial Conference when it welcomes Dickinson to Beldon Field at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
