BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Goucher was looking to get off to a 1-0 start in the Landmark Conference for the third year in a row when it squared off with Moravian this afternoon.
The Gophers spotted their opponent a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute, which left them nearly 60 minutes to respond. All head coach Bryan Laut's squad could generate, however, in the second half were three shots that all went wide. The Greyhounds tacked on an insurance goal in the 81st minute to claim a 2-0 victory.
Jeremy Hardy (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Beacon School) accounted for the only two shots that Goucher was able to get off in the first half. Both of his attempts occurred in the first 13 minutes of the contest and were stopped by Brian Boland, who played all 90 minutes in goal for the Moravian.
The Greyhounds (5-2, 1-0 Landmark) assumed the 1-0 advantage when Matthew Gandy scored on a header from Brett Luben's corner kick at 31:18.
It wasn't until Shane Harder received a pass from Connor Phillips and, after making the goalie come out to play the ball, was able to send it home into the open net at 80:28 that Goucher's deficit grew to two goals.
Before they play their second Landmark Conference game against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy one week from today, the Gophers (1-4-1, 0-1 Landmark) will take on Shenandoah at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
