WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Goucher College men's soccer team (6-4-2, Landmark 1-1-1) dropped its first Landmark Conference matchup against Catholic University, 2-0, on Wednesday evening following two late goals by the Cardinals.
The Cardinals netted goals in the 82nd and 88th minutes to sneak by the Gophers, earning their second conference win, and moving into first place of the mid-year conference rankings.
The Gophers and the Cardinals traded shot-for-shot in the opening minutes, but neither team was able to move the needle to earn the lead. Junior Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa.) stopped five shots on goal in the opening half to keep Catholic scoreless.
Goucher threatened in the 59th minute when junior Konrad Bulanowski (Philadelphia, Pa.) headed a shot on goal, but Zachery Tashjy denied the Gopher opportunity for his second save of the afternoon. The Cardinals returned the favor with three shots on goal, but Hendry continued to rack up saves in the game.
Finally, the Cardinals broke the scoring silence in the 82nd minute when Mike Narzikul ripped a shot on goal that was stopped by Hendry, but the ball returned to play. Nelson Zimmerman cleaned up the loose ball and scored off the rebound.
Goucher attacked on a set piece in the 86th minute, looking to even the score, but the offensive pressure proved costly as Catholic scored again in the 88th minute when Brian Galfond chipped a shot over Hendry's head following a cross sent in by Zimmerman.
Head coach Bryan Laut said about the game, "Today was a tough game for us. Coming to Catholic and playing on their grass is always difficult. The main thing we need to do is regroup, recover and be ready to bounce back this weekend."
Catholic held an advantage in shots (21-8) and shots on goal 13-2. Goucher had five corner kicks to Catholic's four.
The Gophers return to the pitch on Saturday when they travel to Moravian to take on the Greyhounds in conference play at 4 p.m.
