Mt. Pleasant, Phillips, Cohen Named All-Landmark Conference Men’s Soccer Team

TOWSON, Md. – Three Goucher College Men's Soccer players were named to the 2017 All-Landmark Conference teams it was announced today by the Landmark Conference office. Seniors Scott Mt. Pleasant (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Drew Phillips (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls Central School), along with sophomore Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach Calif./Redondo Union), were all tabbed as Second Team selections at their respective positions.

 

Mt. Pleasant, a defender, scored a pair of goals in his final season at Goucher, both of which came in the same match on Sept. 26 against Hood College. The first tied the match up at 1-1 in the 81st minute, which was followed up by the game-winner in overtime to lift the Gophers to a 2-1 win. During his career, Mt. Pleasant started in all 71 of the 71 games played by the Gophers during his tenure. "This is the perfect way for Scott to end a fantastic four years at Goucher," observed head coach Bryan Laut. "Scott has stepped in and not only played and started every single game during his four years but he only came off the field for approximately five minutes during all of those games combined. This senior season was easily his best as he led our backline to one of our best overall defensive performances in program history, and he provided outstanding leadership on and off the field."

 

Philips, a midfielder, netted two goals and two assists this past season. Like Mt. Pleasant, both of his goals came in the same match, this time against Landmark opponent Juniata (a 2-2 draw). He finished his senior year with six points, for a total of 21 points during his career. Philips also started 63 out of the 67 games he was able to play in.  "Drew will go down as one of the most accomplished soccer players at Goucher" commented Coach Laut, "as he is the program's second 2-time All-Landmark Conference Honoree and he is the first and only one to do it at two different positions."  Laut continued by stating that after starting the 2017 year off as a defender, "Drew stepped into the midfield in the Juniata game and made an immediate impact scoring 2 goals. He was extremely important in helping our team by leading the way with his strong two-way play in the middle of the field.  Drew really matured into a well-rounded leader on the team." 

 

This season, Cohen, a sophomore forward, scored four goals - tying the team-high - while also recording an assist. Despite being sidelined for five games due to an injury, Cohen started in all of the 13 games he played in this season. "You have to give Brandon a lot of credit this year", said Laut. "He missed a couple of weeks with a broken nose and spent the majority of the season playing with a mask that significantly impacted his ability on the field. Even with all of that, he found a way to make a big impact offensively by creating numerous opportunities in the attack."  Laut concluded by saying that Cohen "clearly demonstrated his ability to compete at the highest levels in the league when the mask came off for the final week of play."
