LANGHORNE, Pa. - Three different players scored for the Goucher College men's soccer team as it opened the season with a 3-1 win at Cairn University at the Stillman Athletic Complex Friday afternoon.
- Goucher (1-0) took its first shot in the third minute as a bid by Michael Adekanmbi was stopped by Cairn (0-1) keeper Chris Eelman.
- Just past the four-minute mark, Bobby Beringer put the Gophers up 1-0 on a feed from Adekanmbi. Eelman came out to his left to play Adekanmbi, who sent a short pass to Beringer and a wide-open goal.
- The Highlanders put their first shot on frame in the 21st minute that was turned aside by Gopher goalie Ale Sternini.
- Sternini made another save with just under 20 minutes to go in the opening half.
- With 12:55 left in the first half, Andres Aristimuno made it 2-0 as his leaping one-timer beat Eelman to his left. Rafael Berhanu assisted on the goal.
- Sternini made a pair of saves in the 39th minute to keep Cairn off the board.
- The hosts halved the lead just past the 50-minute mark when Alijah Miller scored.
- In the 61st minute Yaya Diabagate had a low shot turned aside by Eelman.
- Just over a minute late, Adekanmbi scored his first Goucher goal, with Berhanu picking up his second assist of the afternoon.
- Aristimuno had a shot turned aside with just over 11 minutes remaining.
- Sternini recorded his final save in the 84th minute.
- Goucher held a narrow 15-14 shot advantage on the afternoon, with both teams taking seven corner kicks.
- Sternini made six saves for the Gophers, while Eelman made four stops.
- Beringer and Adekanmbi each led Goucher with four shots apiece.
- The Gophers won their season opener for the first time since 2014 with they downed Hood 1-0.
- Goucher plays its home opener on Sunday, September 3, when it hosts Notre Dame (Md.) in a 1 pm contest at Beldon Field.
