Gophers Extend Season-Opening Win Streak to Four, Laut Wins No. 100

TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College men's soccer team scored a goal in each half as it posted a 2-1 non-conference victory over Neumann University Sunday afternoon at Beldon Field. The Gophers improved to 4-0 to start the season. Goucher head coach Bryan Laut picked up his 100th career victory as a collegiate head coach.
- Goucher (4-0) staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute as Jonathan Alvarado scored his first goal of the season.
- Alvarado took a short pass from Rafael Berhanu and blasted a shot from 30 yards out that found the upper right corner of the goal.
- Just over two minutes later, the Knights (1-2) tied the game on a goal by Jake Kuzmick.
- Alvarado had another shot on goal in the 18th minute that was saved by Knight keeper Carson Metzger.
- Goucher held a 7-6 shot advantage at intermission as the game was tied 1-1.
- Goucher had the first five shots of the second half, including two by Michael Adekanmbi that were saved by Metzger.
- Goucher goalie Ale Sternini made a save on a Neumann bid in the 69th minute.
- Just past the game's 70-minute mark, first year Drew Gentile scored his first collegiate goal to put the Gophers up 2-1.
- Gentile won a battle with a Neumann defender and fired a shot from 18 yards out that went in off the far right post.
- Neither side put a shot on goal the rest of the way.
- Goucher outshot Neumann 14-8, including 7-2 in the second half and held a 5-4 edge in corners.
- Sternini made three saves, while Metzger finished with six stops.
- Alvarado led the Gophers with three shots.
- Dating back to last season, Goucher is unbeaten in nine straight games (6-0-3).
- Goucher has won three straight and five of the last six against Neumann.
- LAUT won his 100th game as a collegiate head coach on Sunday. 78 of those have come at the helm of the Gophers, while he won 22 games as head coach at his alma mater, Assumption University, from 2001-03.
- Goucher is back in action Wednesday, hosting Wilson at 4 pm at Beldon Field.
