Gophers Pick Up Key Three Points on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. - Senior Bobby Beringer scored just 3:44 into the game and the Goucher College men's soccer team made it stand up as it picked up three key points in the Landmark Conference standings, edging Elizabethtown 1-0 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Beldon Fied.  The win marked Goucher's first-ever victory over the Blue Jays.

First Half

  • Beringer hooked up with fellow senior Jeremiah Odubade to give Goucher (8-5-2, 3-4-1 Landmark) a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.
  • Odubade touched a ball over to Beringer, who slid a low shot past Etown (7-6-2, 5-3) keeper Kelvin Del Cid, who had come out, and the ball trickled in before a Blue Jay defender could knock it away.
  • Beringer had another shot saved by Del Cid in the 12th minute.
  • Goucher goalie Ale Sternini made his first two saves in the 17th and 19th minutes.
  • The Gophers outshot the Blue Jays 8-5 in the opening 45 minutes.

Second Half

  • Sternini made his first save of the second half in the 58th minute.
  • Odubade sent a shot high in the 78th minute.
  • A minute later, Sternini made a save on a bid by Pedro Vinent.
  • Mehluko Letsoalo put a shot on frame with six minutes left that was stopped by Sternini.
  • Michael Adekanmbi sent a shot high for Goucher with two minutes to go.

Numbers and Notes

  • Etown outshot Goucher 10-2 in the second half and 15-10 for the game.
  • Sternini made five saves for his third shutout of the season, while Del Cid made one save.
  • Goucher had been 0-5-4 in nine previous meetings with Elizabethtown.
  • The Gophers currently sit in a three-way tie for fifth with 10 points in the Landmark standings with Moravian and Scranton.  Goucher and Moravian are each 3-4-1 while the Royals are 2-2-4.
  • Prior to the game Goucher honored seniors Beringer, Odubade, Eli Berkowitz and Dylan Weston.
