Gophers Bounced From Landmark Playoffs

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Second-seeded Lycoming College scored twice in the first 11 minutes of the game as it went on to post a 6-1 win over sixth-seeded Goucher College in the Landmark Conference men's soccer semifinals Thursday evening at UPMC Field at Keiper Stadium.  The Warriors advance to Saturday's final, traveling to top-seeded Catholic, a come-from-behind 3-2 overtime winner over No. 4 Drew in Thursday's other semifinal.

First Half

  • Goucher (10-7-2) goalie Ale Sternini made his first save of the night a minute into the game.
  • In the third minute, a bid by the Gophers' Michael Adekanmbi was stopped by Lycoming (11-3-6) keeper Nick Wilke.
  • Just shy of the game's 10-minute mark, the Warriors took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Owen Magee.
  • Under a minute later, at 10:37, Christian Woobay scored to make it 2-0.
  • The Gophers got a goal back in the 21st minute as a 20-yard strike inside the right post by Gus Dalzell made it 2-1.  Dalzell scored in his third straight game.
  • Adekanmbi had a shot go just wide right with 15 minutes to play.
  • Aidan Stillman made it 3-1 for Lycoming with his goal 3:09 before intermission.

Second Half

  • Sternini was tested moments into the second half, stopping a Woobay shot.
  • Wilke made a save on a shot by Adekanmbi a minute later.
  • Joe Bamfo increased Lycoming's lead to 4-1 in the 55th minute.
  • The Gophers went a man down in the 58th minute on a red card.
  • Lycoming scored twice in a 41-second span to up its lead to 6-1 with 26:25 to play.

Numbers and Notes

  • Lycoming outshot Goucher 18-6.  The Warriors also held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
  • Adekanmbi had three of the Gophers' six shots.
  • Goucher was making its third Landmark semifinal appearance and second straight.
  • Sternini made five saves before being relieved for the final 10-plus minutes by Dylan Weston, who made a pair of saves.
  • Wilke had a pair of saves for the Warriors.

What's Next

  • Goucher will learn Monday if it has earned a bid to the ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Championship.  Those pairings will be announced after the NCAA field is announced.
