Goucher Entry Sets New Pool Record in 200 Medley Relay
YORK, Pa. — Goucher's Matthew Brower (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) set a new school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle and four of his teammates combined to break the facility record in the 200-yard medley relay as the Gophers competed against two opponents out of the Capital Athletic Conference tonight.
The Gophers (2-6) came up short against Salisbury, 109-95, and York, 114-90, which hosted the double dual meet. To complete the team scoring, the Spartans (7-2) turned back the Sea Gulls (2-4), 115.5-88.5.
Brower accounted for one of Goucher's four first-place performances in an individual event by touching first in the 1000 free. His winning time of 10:19.39 is nearly 4.6 faster than the former school record of 10:24.02 by Georgi Shalamanov (Velingrad, Bulgaria/St. St. Kiril & Metodi) in a meet against Gallaudet and St. Mary's (Md.) in November 2009.
Goucher's entry of Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton), Shalamanov, Charlie Leonard (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and Brendan McFadden (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) turned in the fastest time in the history of York's Natatorium while placing first in the 200 medley relay. The quartet was clocked at 1:39.58, which lowers the pool record set in 2009 by a foursome from Mary Washington by 13-hundredths of a second.
Shalamanov went on to take first in both the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, completing those events in 2:04.76 and 1:01.57, respectively. Williams was the meet's top performer in the 100 backstroke as he finished in :56.65.
McFadden placed second in the 200 free (1:53.15) and Leoanard was runner-up in the 100 butterfly (:55.00).
