TOWSON, Md. – Goucher was down to Neumann only 2-1 at the
conclusion of doubles play this afternoon, but then the Knights
(7-1) pulled off a clean sweep of the six singles matches to earn
an 8-1 triumph over head coach Michael Vann's Gophers.
Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y./Solomon Schechter) and Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) recorded the only victory for the Gophers (0-4) as they defeated David Pfister and Brian Crispin, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles. Brooks and Baum started out strong, winning the first three games, but later had to save two match points and rally from being down 6-7.
The same four players hooked up in singles play: Pfister knocked off Brooks 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 and Crispin turned back Baum 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. At No. 2, Chris Brown prevailed in a first-set tiebreaker and went on to record a 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory over Francisco Barrera (Wheaton, Md./Wheaton).
