On the same day that sophomore Francisco Barrera (Wheaton, Md./Wheaton) registered the first singles victory of his collegiate career, Goucher broke into the win column for the first time during the 2008-09 season. The Gophers dropped only three games during the doubles competition and were were able to dominate singles play as well as they coasted past Lancaster Bible, 9-0, today.

Barrera Succeeds at First Singles, First Career Victory

TOWSON, Md. – On the same day that sophomore
Francisco Barrera (Wheaton, Md./Wheaton)
registered the first singles victory of his collegiate career,
Goucher broke into the win column for the first time during the
2008-09 season. The Gophers dropped only three games during the
doubles competition and were were able to dominate singles play as
well as they coasted past Lancaster Bible, 9-0, today.
Barrera, who was competing at first singles, pinned a 6-3, 6-3 setback on Timothy Hogan. At No. 2, Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y./Solomon Schechter) defeated Jonathon Recaman 6-2, 6-1; at No. 3, Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) overwhelmed Josh Formanek 6-0, 6-0, and at No. 4, Alex Vogel (New York, N.Y./The American School in Switzerland) turned back Brendan Arey 6-2, 6-0.
Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brandon Taylor at fifth singles. The Gophers (1-5) were awarded a point at No. 6 when Josh Shuster of the Chargers was forced to retire.
In doubles play, Baum and Vogel downed Hogan and Recaman, 8-2, at No. 1, Jeff McLeod (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and Weiss pounded Formanek and Taylor, 8-0, at No. 2, and Barrera and Ben Tokarski (Pomona, N.Y./Ramapo) recorded an 8-1 victory over Shuster and Arey at No. 3.
