Weiss Prevails in Tiebreaker to Capture First Set at Fifth

TOWSON, Md. – Billie Weiss (Lutherville,
Md./Dulaney) captured the first set of his match at No. 5
singles, but that was the only set that went Goucher's way during
the singles competition today as the Gophers (1-6) were battered by
York, 9-0.
Weiss went up a set in his match against Jeff Mansfield of the Spartans by prevailing in a tiebreaker, 7-3, but Mansfield came back to win the second set and then a super tiebreaker to complete his 6-7 (3), 6-1, 1-0 (6) victory.
At first singles, York's Tim Mowrer defeated Francisco Barrera (Wheaton, Md./Wheaton) 6-0, 6-1.
The Spartans (6-7) allowed only five games to get away in the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Mowrer and Colin Jones pinned an 8-3 setback on Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y./Solomon Schechter).
