April 25, 2009
TOWSON, Md. – Michael Brooks (Old Westbury,
N.Y./Solomon Schechter) and Steve Baum (Fallston,
Md./Fallston) were partners in a win at first doubles and
both players were also victorious in singles play today as Goucher
picked up its first Landmark Conference victory of the season, a
5-4 triumph over visiting Susquehanna.
Brooks and Baum provided the Gophers (2-10, 1-5 Landmark) with one of the two points they secured in doubles play by pinning an 8-5 setback on William Mellor and Alec Green. The second point was delivered by Francisco Barrera (Wheaton, Md./Wheaton) and Henning Jakob (Berlin, Germany/Theresienschule Catholic), who were 8-6 winners over Kirk McAuliffe and Cory Prescott at third doubles.
That left Goucher needing three wins in singles play to dispose of the Crusaders (1-15, 1-6 Landmark) and the first three singles matches to be completed all went to the Gophers. First to finish was Brooks at No. 2 and he defeated Matthew Quadrini 6-1, 6-1. Next was Baum, who registered a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Matt Mitchell.
The match that put the Gophers over the top was fourth singles where Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) turned back Green 6-3, 6-4.
At first singles, Mellor pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (8) win over Goucher's Francisco Barrera (Wheaton, Md./Wheaton).
